Cancer and Me!

If one word can invoke a multitude of emotions, then Cancer is that word. It makes you question everything yet it also pulls life into focus.

I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in September 2021, on October 4th, I had a single Mastectomy, by 10th November, I had started preventative Chemotherapy. It was all so fast, which in once respect, is incredible, mentally however, it takes a moment to catch up with it all.

I am now in March, chemo is finished and I’m about to start Radiotherapy. It’s all been a blur.

I have received the most incredible treatment from the NHS, they have saved my life.

For many years, I have practiced yoga and meditation. During this time, I have increased my practice, to keep the mind strong. I’m not saying it doesn’t wander from time to time, but I have a coping mechanism to bring it back to present which really helps.

The biggest difference I have noticed since being diagnosed is the change in the people around me. At first, everyone rallied, I had incredible support from friends and family, however, over time, the friends drifted, not all, but most. Messages dropped off and visits became non-existent, at first, I got really upset, but I get it, people distance themselves from things they can’t control or don’t understand. My world became smaller so I had little to add to a conversation. Yet I’m blessed, I have an incredible family and a close group of friends who have got me through the toughest time of my life. I have to give a shout out to my husband, Dave has been incredible, from cooking meals, looking after the dogs, helping me out of bed and supporting me when I have a melt down. Everyone needs a Dave!!

What I will say is, if anyone reading this has a friend or family member going through Cancer, reach out to them. Be a part of their journey. Send them a message, a funny joke or share something with them that made you smile. They may not message back straight away, but they will and you may have made their day.

P.S Don’t forget to check yourselves and anything unusual, get it checked out.

Xx
